Fall 2026 EduceLab Undergraduate Research
EduceLab—UK’s NSF-funded, $18 million heritage science lab—is recruiting students to serve on its undergraduate research team. PI and Computer Science Professor Brent Seales along with Co-Is from Anthropology, Materials Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering invite motivated students studying computer science, materials science, history, preservation, anthropology, archaeology, and related disciplines to apply. No experience in heritage science is necessary.
Heritage science is a multidisciplinary field that applies the tools, techniques, and rigor of science to the study of cultural objects, such as burial sites and caves, damaged manuscripts, faded paintings, architectural surfaces, human and natural contexts, and even bourbon barrels. Possible research projects include micro-CT scanning and 3D modeling of historical objects; computer vision software tools development; confocal microscopy of dental and other surfaces; digital reconstruction
of artifacts; virtual imaging of archaeological sites; material characterization of heritage objects; and AI-informed application development in all of these areas. Project involvement will be matched with student interest. Students interested in pursuing a departmental or Lewis Honors thesis are highly encouraged to apply.
