Carol Street mentors undergraduates in the Learning Lab at the University of Kentucky Libraries Special Collections Research Center. The Learning Lab internship program provides an immersive, one-year internship experience in archives and primary source research that cultivates critical thinking skills, information literacy, and community. Passionate about archives and the collections they contain, Carol infuses coursework with modern-day examples to better help students understand history and their place in it, practice empathy for others who experience a different history, as well as become better-informed citizens of the world. Each intern has presented their Learning Lab research at regional, national, and international conferences, and a number have published their work in professional journals. At the end of their internship, students no longer see archives as dusty places, but places that contain a multitude of stories, ideas for research, and inspiration.
Carol received her MLS, BA, and a certificate in Museum Studies from Indiana University, and has previously worked at museums, libraries, and other archives around the country. She came to UK because the Learning Lab offers a unique opportunity to mentor students in archival work. When she’s not sharing her love of archives, Carol can be found on the cross country field with her horse, Tammany, where they compete in the sport of eventing.
